Norse Mythology

In Norse mythology, Thor is an Æsir God associated with thunder, lightning, storms, oak trees, strength, the protection of mankind, and also hallowing and fertility. Thor is described as a barrel-chested ugly man, carrying a menagerie of magical weapons, from a pair of magical gauntlets to a girdle of forcefulness. However, his virtually notable weapon is the hammer Mjölnir, which is powerful enough to level mountains.

Backstory

Thor was born to Odin, king of Asgard, and the giantess, Fjörgyn. He is the blood brother of Meili, half-brother of Týr, Hodr, Bragi, and Baldur. At some point in his life, he would marry Sif and sire a daughter with her. Thor besides had two sons, Magni and Modi, both of which were conceived with an unknown Jötunn, and had different mothers (Sindri commented this was a "sordid story").

Odin commissioned Brok and Sindri to build a powerful weapon, Mjölnir, for Thor to use to protect Asgard. Both dwarven brothers would come up to bitterly regret making the hammer many years later.

At some point, Odin invited the stone giant, Hrungnir, to Asgard. After getting drunkard on mead, Hrungnir was goaded past Odin into making all manner of boasts and antics, all for the amusement of the court. When Thor arrived at the hall, he was unamused by the drunken giant's threats, and proceeds to slam Mjölnir so hard on Hrungnir's head that information technology smashed to pieces, with chunks of rock ended upwardly lodged in Thor's head. Startled by the faceful of stone, he didn't detect Hrungnir's body falling on peak of him. None of the Aesir in the hall were strong enough even to budge the corpse off him. Thor'south sons, Magni and Modi, who at the time were no bigger than shrubs, would come to their father'southward aid and managed to lift Hrungnir's body off him while no 1, except for Mimir, was looking. Magni would get all the praise from Thor for being blonder, while Modi became bitter and resentful towards his blood brother for not getting any credit for his involvement.

Afterwards Odin was forced to flee Jötunheim when the Giants discovered him trying to steal their secret knowledge of the time to come, he furiously ordered Thor to utilise Mjölnir to slaughter every giant in Midgard that he could find. By the time of Laufey's decease, Thor had already slaughtered most of the Giants in Midgard (with the exception of Jörmungandr) and earned a fearful reputation as the strongest Norse God in all the Nine Realms.

When the giant Thamur went to Midgard in society to search for his son, Hrimthur, Thor appeared and killed the mason by causing him to fall on his own chisel and Thamur's gigantic torso crushed the line-fishing village which worshiped the Vanir God Njörd. Thor would ever act like he planned to make the Giant fall onto the hamlet and destroy it, although Mimir states that it was only just a instance of luck and called the God of Thunder as the "sweaty bawbag".

Following the murder, Odin entered a bet with Hrimthur, who had disguised himself as a mortal, to ameliorate the walls of Asgard within a near-impossible bridge of time. Odin lost the bet and sent Thor to kill Hrimthur when he discovered stonemasons true nature every bit a Jötunn. Unbeknownst to Odin, Hrimthur had placed a weakness the walls and entrusted the surreptitious of his deception only to Freya for the preparation for Ragnarök when Surtr make it to burn as Asgard to ash.

Whilst he was taking a nap, Thrym stolen Mjölnir and ran off to Jötunheim, while he (Mimir describe him as the "thunder lummox") was sleeping. Thor snuck into Jötunheim with Freya into the wedding banquet between her and Thrym. When Behemothic King revealed Mjölnir during the ceremony, Thor revealed himself, took back his hammer and began slaughtering every Giant present for the festivities, including Thrym past nifty his skull. That is until Freya cast a spell to return Thor and herself back to Asgard, which caused him to concur some form of disdain confronting her as he was likewise ordered by Odin to constitute a foothold in the realm.

Thor also nevertheless trusted his blood brother Baldur completely, despite the fact that the God of Light had lost his sanity long agone in the eyes of the other Aesir and was regarded as dangerously unhinged.

God of State of war (2018)

Although absent-minded in the main entrada, he is mentioned consistently throughout as a monster who slew every Giant he could observe in Midgard to satisfy his blood-lust.

Thor is also mentioned to have fought The World Serpent years ago during his massacre of the Giants. But, instead of emerging victorious, the World Serpent proved to be but as strong as the Thunder God, leading to a stalemate. Thus Thor was forced to return to his father Odin empty-handed. As a effect, Thor and The Earth Serpent accept hated each other e'er since. Information technology is also said that their rivalry will not end until the coming of Ragnarök.

Kratos and Atreus also see the spirit of a former disciple of Thor, who desires vengeance on the God for wronging his family. Afterward his father died, the spirit'southward mother built a statue of Thor to watch over his grave and were surprised when the God himself came to offer condolences. While they were initially thrilled, Thor took advantage of the family'due south hospitality. The mother had to beg him to leave, but in a drunken rage Thor murdered her. The man lived in grief until it eventually turned to rage and hatred.

Earlier he tin leave Midgard to begin his quest for vengeance, he requests that the statue be destroyed, and any valuables in his father'due south grave may exist looted with his approval. In their boat, Kratos uses the man's story to remind his son of an important lesson: the lives of men mean zip to the Gods, recounting Kratos' own experience of being betrayed time and again by the Olympian Gods.

After Modi fled to Asgard upon Kratos killing Magni, Thor was furious to learn of his favored son'south death. Believing Modi abandoned Magni, Thor angrily and brutally beats him for his cowardice.

Thor only physically appears in the game'south true ending. During a dream nigh the time to come, years after the events of the game, Kratos and Atreus were sleeping. Thor arrived and summoned a huge storm outside their house, causing Kratos and Atreus to investigate. When Kratos demands he reveal his identity, Thor silently lifts his cloak, revealing Mjölnir every bit it emits electricity. The dream ends and is relayed by Atreus to his father after he wakens, theorizing Thor volition come to avenge the death of his sons and half-brother.

God of War: Ragnarök

Thor will return, corroborating with Freya to seek vengeance against Kratos and Atreus for the death of Baldur and Thor's sons.

Appearance

Thor's full appearance is non fully shown in God of War, though he is seen possessing blueish eyes, ruby-red hair, and a thick bristles which seems to be braided (as mentioned in The Lost Pages of Norse Myth: Episode 4). He is exceptionally tall and muscular, roughly equal to Kratos in terms of body stature and height. He wears a black hooded cloak fastened together with a yellow leather chord and armor, the latter of which consists of a decoratively embossed dark-colored chestguard and matching vambraces worn over a long-sleeved shirt. He seems to take a common cold-blooded and serious expression very similar to Kratos himself in the by. According to Mimir, Thor also has several pieces of the stone behemothic Hrungnir embedded in his skull.

It is shown in God of State of war: Ragnarok that Thor's advent is similar to what was shown in the catastrophe of God of War, but that he is burly and thick waisted; with a large, rather obese only still muscular and heavily built figure, maybe accurately depicting his clarification past Mimir every bit a "fat dobber". He is unarmored across his bare chest and potbelly, only wears plated pauldrons and bracers on his arms and sports leather armor effectually his waist to protect his upper legs and hips. He too sports tattoos similar to, though not every bit extensive equally, those of his brother, Baldur. Like to Kratos, Thor bears a scar over his right eye. Although unconfirmed, this scar could be the issue of Hrungnir's corpse falling on him immediately after his murder at the hands of the God of Thunder.

Personality

Thor is widely feared throughout the 9 Realms for his cruelty, violent temper, brutality, and sadism. He is utterly ruthless, showing no mercy to his enemies, and his bloodlust was noted by Mimir to exist the only thing greater than Odin'southward paranoia, and many consider him the worst of the Aesir gods. Despite existence one-half-giant himself, Thor took sadistic pleasure in torturing and killing any giant he could detect. His reputation was somewhat like to Ares, who was considered the worst amidst the Olympian Gods.

What makes him different from Ares, nevertheless, is that he seems to possess a sense of honor, as he dislikes cowardice. When Modi fled after Magni, his favorite son, died; Thor was enraged, and after crush his surviving son for fleeing from Kratos and deemed Modi a coward. He likewise somewhat cares for his worshipers, every bit when one of his faithful followers died he fabricated time to visit the family, although even then he still could exist enraged easily, especially while drunk, and concluded up taking advantage of his higher status.

Thor's overall intelligence could be called into question, every bit many a fourth dimension has Thor been made a fool of himself or made stupid, reckless mistakes (quite comparable to his sons, in fact). Kratos chosen Thor as a fool when hearing not even Mjölnir in manus will break the ice to achieve Thamur's magical chisel. Mimir called Thor for the destruction upon the Jötnar as sweaty bawbag, fat dobber, thunder lummox and the biggest butching bastard in the 9 Realms. Brok considered him the big idiot, and Atreus too called him an idiot when hearing about how he got crushed by Hrungnir's trunk. Nearly of all, Thor had his legendary hammer stolen by the giant Thrym, when he was carelessly sleeping. Withal, Thor is clever enough to know his limit and not endeavor to challenge Starkaðr alone, knowing very well that he would dice.

In add-on, Thor is extremely arrogant, typical for an Aesir, equally he would go to great lengths to cement his reputation amidst the 9 Realms and be respected, every bit well as feared. An case beingness the destruction of the village when Thor battled Thamur, Thor claimed credit for the giant's death and the village'due south devastation, despite the fact that Thor was merely lucky in both deportment.

To aid his reputation as one of the near hated and feared Gods of the Nine Realms, Thor's overall demeanor seems to circumduct effectually him being cruel and sadistic merely for the sake of it. An case of this could be seen when Thor needlessly murdered Hrungnir even though the rock Giant was merely amusing the Aesir and was a threat to no one.

whose only outward expressions seem to exist of rage and smug arrogance due to his abilities. An example of this is seen when Thor was the only God non amused by Hrungnir's foolish performance in Asgard, preferring to outright murder the Jotun seeing every bit how the simpleton had nix to offering him other than his death.

Thor's vicious nature can come up out fifty-fifty when he is trying to be friendly towards others. After a wayward spirits father had passed away, his mother built a statue of Thor to watch over his grave. Appearing to the family, Thor offered his condolences for their loss. Although they were overjoyed at first with the Gods presence, Thor took reward of their hospitality and quickly became drunk. Distraught, the mother asked him to leave to which Thor responded by brutally murdering her in a drunken rage earlier leaving the son behind, cursing the God of Thunder.

Despite his night side, Thor has proven to deeply intendance and trust his family. He is known for being very loyal to Odin and was close with Baldur, comforting him in his depression over being unable to feel and trusting him with his life, despite the latter's insanity and disgust towards the former's bloodlust. Magni points out that he and Modi have to trust Baldur considering their male parent believes in him, despite Modi proclaiming that their uncle had not been sane for a while. Thor was also known for being furious at Magni'south death and after Modi and Baldur died too, Thor would apparently attack Kratos and Atreus to seek vengeance for their demises.

Powers and Abilities

Being both half-giant and Odin'southward firstborn son, Thor is the 2d most powerful of the Aesir (and maybe physically the strongest Aesir), surpassed only past his father. His power is groovy enough for having slaughtered almost all the Giants living outside of Jötunheim, whilst existence recognized and feared by most aslope his brutality. In improver, even with Kratos and Atreus having killed Baldur, Magni, and Modi, Thor appears confident plenty in his abilities to personally confront them at their home past himself, and Mimir stated that he does non know whether Kratos can kill Thor.

  • Superhuman Strength: As the God of Strength, Thor is the strongest of the Aesir Gods, surpassing that of Baldur, Týr, Magni, Modi, and mayhap fifty-fifty Odin himself in terms of fauna force and concrete strength. His strength is and then great that he was able to singlehandedly slaughter the Giants to most extinction, with just Jörmungandr existence strong enough to match his strength; their first battle was felt across all the Nine Realms, and their battle at Ragnarök is said to have splintered Yggdrasil, a construct that transcends space and time and supports all of cosmos with its beingness, with Thor hit the World Snake so hard every bit to send him back in fourth dimension. Only Starkaðr, the strongest of the Giants, proved to exist too much for Thor to defeat or even fight solitary, requiring the aid from the combined armies of Asgard, Vanaheim, and Midgard to subdue him, although Thor was still strong enough to rip his arms off later Starkaor had sustained astringent injuries, and Surtr, the first Burn down Giant, who he would need the help of Odin to defeat at Ragnarok. With Mjölnir, Thor was able to shatter the head of Hrungnir the Brawler with a unmarried blow. Thor can possibly hold strength capable of rivalling Kratos' as he came alone to challenge him and his son in their house. Mimir said it is unknown who would win if Kratos and Thor clashed.
  • Superhuman Durability: As the strongest of the Aesir Gods, Thor must have tremendous superhuman durability. He is able endure attacks from the Giants without much impairment, which was most likely crucial in his ability to massacre them. However, he nevertheless can exist incapacitated, such as when the colossal body of Hrungnir fell on him he was unable to remove the corpse himself until his sons removed it for him. He'southward also destined to dice later on his boxing with Jormungandr, falling victim to the latter'southward venom.
  • Atmospheric condition Manipulation: As the God of Storms, Thor has the ability to summon harsh lightning storms at whim. He displayed this power when he acquired a giant storm to occur to wake Kratos and Atreus upwards.
    • Lightning Manipulation: As the God of Thunder, Thor has accented command over electricity and lightning, with it being an innate ability inherited by his sons, although Thor's electrokinetic powers must conspicuously far surpass theirs. During his assail on Kratos and Atreus, Thor was capable of causing bolts of lightning to constantly rain downwardly on their house by but willing it.
  • Immortality: Equally with all Gods, Thor is immortal and cannot be killed by anything not powerful enough.
  • Master Combatant: As the mightiest warrior of Asgard, Thor is an extremely skilled combatant with hundreds of years worth of training and feel, equally he single-handedly killed about every behemothic on Midgard and many other powerful beings. Thor, alongside Odin, is capable of defeating Surtr, the strongest Fire Giant and immensely exceptional combatant, during Ragnarok. Mimir stated that due to Thor's ain incredible fighting prowess, even Kratos, who Mimir describes every bit being the most proficient killer he's ever known, is uncertain to defeat him in battle.
    • Hammer Mastery: Thor is incredibly skilled in using his hammer Mjölnir, which he uses to wipe out virtually all Giants.

Weapons

  • Mjölnir: Forged by Brok and Sindri, this special ane-handed hammer is Thor's weapon of selection when killing giants and other foes. In Norse mythology, it is said that when thrown, Mjölnir always hits its target and returns to the wielder's hand and that it is capable of crushing mountains in a single accident. It is besides described as a "superweapon" by Mimir and as such is i of the well-nigh powerful weapons in all of the Nine Realms. The only weapons capable of opposing its immense power are the Leviathan Axe, Surtr's Sword, and possibly the Blades of Chaos.
  • Megingjörð : A belt that doubles Thor's already tremendous strength.
  • Járngreipr : A pair of gauntlets that allows Thor to handle Mjölnir'due south power.

Trivia

  • His Greek equivalent (in terms of abilities) is Zeus. Yet, in terms of ruling Zeus' equivalent was Odin. Thor'south bloodthirsty nature also makes him like Ares, even though they are non counterparts.
    • You lot could also argue his reputation as the most vicious of his pantheon would make him a counterpart of sorts to Kratos in his past life (when he was feared throughout Greece as the Ghost of Sparta)
  • In Julius Caesar's Gallic Wars, Thor is referred to equally Vulcan (whose Greek counterpart is the God Hephaestus). Vulcan and Hephaestus, similar Thor, were Gods associated with thunder: Hephaestus (or Vulcan) was said to use his hammer to craft Zeus's (or Jupiter'southward) thunderbolts. As with Hephaestus, Thor is described in Norse mythology every bit a benefactor to flesh, bringing gifts to men, a protector of artisans and freemen. Finally, Every bit with Thor, Vulcan and Hephaestus were Gods associated with snakes, fertility and healing.
  • Thor is much like Zeus as they both beat out their own sons to a bloody pulp, Zeus beat downwards Hephaestus for lying to him about Pandora's Box existence safe on the dorsum of Cronos, while Thor crush his son Modi under the assumption he left his better-received brother Magni behind to die to Kratos.
    • Thor and Zeus in the series were both seen as monsters, Zeus imprisoned the Titans because of Cronos, while Thor killed and murdered giants merely due to his father's orders.
    • Another similarity was that they both had more than than 1 lover in their lives, whom they fathered Demigod children with, though Thor only e'er had two outside of his spousal relationship with Sif, whereas Zeus had several lovers.
  • While his face up is covered in darkness, pausing the paradigm for a moment when lightning strikes reveal his advent as having blueish eyes and a crimson beard, as he is commonly described in Norse mythology.
  • Faye, Atreus's mother, considered Thor to be the worst of the Aesir. It is understandable for her to think that fashion, as Thor was considered the virtually dangerous enemy toward the giants and Faye herself was a giantess.
    • Co-ordinate to Mimir, Thor wished to fight Faye as she was rumored to be a dandy Jotunn warrior who foiled many of the Aesir's plans. Still, Faye effectively eluded him for her whole life, which angered him profoundly.
  • Mimir says that during his fight with the Globe Serpent at Ragnarok, their boxing will exist so brutal, that the Yggdrasil will splinter, sending the World Serpent dorsum in time before his birth.
  • Both he and Atreus have Jötnar mothers and are part Gods.
    • Atreus has a wooden figure of Thor.
  • Thor apparently has a girl, whom Sindri was about to mention the name before Kratos cuts him off.
    • If the game is faithful to Norse mythology, his daughter'south name would be Thrúd.
  • According to The Lost Pages of Norse Myth: Episode 6; Thor'southward binge across Midgard against the Jötnar went on for thirty years.
    • This is contradicted by Mimir according to him Thor'southward rampage confronting the Jotnar in Midgard lasted for 60 years. This is later explained in Lore & Legends as Thor having committed two genocides, before and later the coming together with the Giant-Kings.
  • When telling Kratos of what he knows of Magni and Modi, Sindri mentions both brothers are of unlike mothers and information technology was a "sordid story".
  • In mythology, Thor was shown to have an association with goats, as shown by his caprine animal-drawn chariot. In the game, this is seemingly reflected with Mjölnir as its hilt is designed with goat heads. In "The Lost Pages of Norse Myth" cinematic, the Mjölnir symbol is designed with goats. Finally, the "Grip of Tanngiost" (which was fabricated in award of Thor) has a caprine animal caput pattern.
  • The soundtrack during the epilogue of God of State of war (2018) refer to Thor as Banamaður Þórr (Slayer/Killer/Murderer Thor), referring to his role during Odin's genocidal campaign against the Jötnar.
